How We Met
Well, Mike and I met on Halloween about 2 years ago, but I don’t remember it. Not because I was under the influence of anything, but because I was more focused on dancing and hanging out with my friends. Mike remembers us dancing around one another and having a great time, and I wish I could remember those fun moments, but I don’t. Fast forward a year and he asks me to be his plus one at one of his best friend’s wedding. I barely knew the guy and had one of my friends point him out as he walked down the aisle! We ended up dancing the night away and having the time of our lives! Our love story was just beginning.
how they asked
Well, my birthday is January 8 and he asked me to spend forever with him on January 3. So his whole plan revolved around calling it a special day for my birthday. First, he took me on one of our favorite hikes along the Grand River which is close to where we live. This place is very special to us because it’s where I first realized that I really was starting to like this guy. He had packed a lunch and we ate under a covered bridge. Warm soup, potatoes and hot chocolate hit the spot on that sunny January afternoon! After that, we hopped in the car and drove to our favorite date area in Holland, Michigan. Many of our dates involve coffee, so we hit up a well-loved coffee shop and hung out for a little bit. A little voice in my head kept wondering,”Is he going to do it today?” Yet, every time that little voice piped up, I quickly dismissed the thought. I did not want to be disappointed when at the end of the day I was not engaged. After all, it was a lovely day he had put together. “Plus, he is acting so normal and not anxious in the slightest, it couldn’t possibly be happening today,” I kept telling myself. So after I had convinced myself it wasn’t happening, he took me to our last stop of the day, which was a sand dune with a million stairs. This place was special to us because it’s the place where we told one another that we loved each other. The little voice was basically screaming when we arrived and I was starting to get really excited! So we parked and climbed the dune in the cold January air. Once we reached the top I realized it was happening. There was a blanket with little mason jars filled with sand and candles accompanied by a photo of us, a dozen roses, and a water bottle that said, “The best is yet to come.” The only thing I could manage out of my mouth was, “Oh my gosh, is this really happening?!” While he just grinned and started launching into his love speech. I continue to freak out as he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.
I will forever remember the joy on his face when I said “YES!” After we finished jumping up and down, our families arrived to celebrate and take pictures. They all were freezing but I didn’t feel a thing. It was indeed, the best day of my life. I am so excited to be marrying the man of my dreams!
