Autumm and Jacob
How We Met
Jake and I met the summer of 2006 when my family moved in across the street from his. I was eight years old at the time and he was 10. I spent my childhood watching Jake trying to impress me with bike and skateboard tricks. (I have to admit, he was pretty good back in the day). All of his hard work paid off in 2012 when he finally asked me to be his girlfriend. I guess everyone saw it coming…except us. He has been there for me through the toughest parts of my life. My dad’s stroke, my mom’s car accident and almost loosing my brother to a blood disorder. I remember writing in my journal around the age of like eleven, “I love Jake Smith.” My brother of course found it and told him!! Yikes. Talk about awkward. Jake says that he’s loved me since the day I moved in across the street back in 2006. We dated for five years until the proposal.
how they asked
Our proposal definitely fit our personalities. We are both really outdoorsy people. Jake went on a family camping trip with me to Michigan’s beautiful upper peninsula. Considering the fact that the U.P. holds a huge spot in both of our hearts, it just feels natural to add more memories to it. We hiked down the lake shore of Lake Superior one day and came across Sable Falls. Naturally, our first instinct was to climb it, so that’s what we did. We got up pretty far on it, and noticed a cave almost at the top. I started to climb towards it and Jake said we should come back a different day when he had his GoPro. I agreed and we climbed back down. There was terrible thunderstorms the next few days after that. Finally, the weather let up and we went right to the waterfall. I didn’t think anything of it. For me, it was just an average day in the U.P. My brother asked if he could wear the GoPro to climb up the waterfall. (Spoiler alert: he knew about the proposal and was the cameraman). We got to climbing and when we finally reached the top, my brother went into the cave first. Jake was hesitating to go in and in kept asking him if we could go in too. (I needed a boost to get over a ledge). He kept fidgeting around with his pocket and then all of the sudden he got down on one knee with a geode ring box and a gorgeous opal ring and asked me to marry him. I of course said yes!
