How We Met

It started four years ago when Michael and I met through mutual friends…while he was on a date. At the time I was living in Manhattan, and he in Brooklyn. On one of our first few dates, we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, so he could show me around his neighborhood and treated me to dinner. Since then, the Brooklyn Bridge had become this unwritten symbol of our relationship as years later we had pictures of it around our apartment. It spoke not only to our first date but to our love for the city.

how they asked

On nice days we would take walks across the bridge, and almost always took pictures together as we did so. However, on this cold March day, a day in which I had forgotten to wear a coat to work, he had asked me to meet him at the Brooklyn Bridge after work. I found this a bit confusing as it wasn’t the best weather, it was a Thursday, and on top of everything else, I had a grad school exam due that evening. It truly hadn’t crossed my mind that it would be a proposal, but in the small chance it was, I made sure to apply a fresh coat of lipstick before I left work that night. After getting lost (which I do often, even to places I’ve been before) for almost 45 minutes, Michael was starting to get antsy. It wasn’t until I found him in a crowd near the entrance of the bridge that I saw his face go from frustrated, to smiling, and as I approached him, we both broke into laughter (at my expense).

As we started to walk across the bridge, I realized not wearing a coat was probably one of the worst decisions I’d made that morning. It wasn’t long before Michael noticed I was getting cold, so as he offered me his coat I thought to myself, “this can’t be a proposal since he gave me his coat, there’s obviously no ring.” When we pulled over to let others pass us as I put on his coat, my heart skipped a beat when he said, “I have a surprise for you.” It was in that moment he pulled out a gold lock that said “Mike & Ashley.” As I went to place the lock on the bridge to add to the collection of others around it, I asked him for the code and he said, “it’s today’s date: 3/31/16.” I couldn’t even process what he had said before I noticed he was down on one knee, asking me to be his for the rest of our lives.
