How We Met
I had just finished my masters degree and decided to move across the country to beautiful British Columbia to start my very first job. It was a small town up north and I didn’t know a soul. In the first month of moving there, my coworker who I quickly became friends with, said that she had a single good looking brother in law who had been asking about that ‘new girl in town who always wears pretty summer dresses’. Oddly enough, later that day I ran into him at the gym and he came and struck up a conversation with me and we exchanged numbers. The next day we got together and spent the entire weekend at the river together.
Ever since that weekend, we have been inseparable. We moved in together 6 months later, got our first puppy, and bought a house a year later. Matthew, being against most social expectations, always expressed that he wasn’t sure marriage was for him. While he assured me we would be together forever, he wasn’t sure he needed a piece of paper for that. He had known that marriage was important to me however spent the course of many months not budging on his stance. Little did I know, during this time, he had signed himself up for a jewelry making course at the local college, contacted a jeweler, and spent the next 4 months hand-making me an engagement ring.
how they asked
It was a Monday night, and I had just come home from yoga looking sweaty and imperfect. He started his usual anti-marriage rant which I promptly ignored and went into the living room to eat crackers and watch TV. He followed me, all the while laughing, and I had no idea why he was being so weird. He gets down on one knee, and asks me if I will be his wife.
I at first thought he was joking, until I saw the tears streaming from his face. I don’t even remember what was said after that but I couldn’t have been happier that the man of my dreams had finally proposed!
I looked down at my hand, and it was a beautiful sapphire, which is my birth stone, and a gorgeous ring that is truly unique, just like him and I. :)
