How We Met: Josh and I met while attending college in Indiana. We bumped into each other randomly in one of the dorm lobbies, said hello, exchanged a few sentences and moved on. A few days later, I got together with some friends to play volleyball and one of them happened to invite Josh along! We flirted throughout the game and, later that night, he asked our mutual friend for my phone number.
After a few weeks of talking and hanging out casually, he asked me if I wanted to go with a group to see a movie. The day came and all the other people backed out. I always tease him that he had them back out on purpose ;) Needless to say, we still went to the movie and the rest is history!
how they asked: It all began when my dad asked me to come with him on a seemingly normal coffee run. I was visiting them for the week and my dad wanted to spend some additional time with me. After we got our drinks, we headed across the street to walk through a big park. This was also fairly normal for us… but then he wanted to walk another lap. Then up a giant hill. Then to another park.
That’s when I knew something was up. He was stalling.
When my dad and I finally returned to the house around 6:30, I was sweaty and felt gross. Josh was coming over that night, but I knew he had gotten stuck at work (according to multiple texts he’d sent me that day). I decided to shower since I knew I had a few hours before he got there.
When I got upstairs, I immediately noticed a light blue dress I’d never seen before laying on my bed. Resting on top of the dress was a small note from Josh with my name on it. The inside said “Let’s take to the sky. PS- Put on this dress and I will pick you up at 8:30.”
Slightly confused (and extremely excited because I’ve always loved the idea of surprise dates), I began to get ready.
At 8:30, Josh knocked on the front door. Still not knowing anything, we got in his car and he began to drive.
Forty minutes later, we walked into the Willis Tower in Chicago. A lady then escorted us to the elevator and up to the 103rd floor of the building.
As we step out of the elevator, I realize we are the only ones on the Skydeck level of the building. There is a professional photographer standing in front of one of the skyboxes waiting to take our picture. Josh and I both step out on the glass ledge while overlooking the city we both love. The city at night has always been one of my favorite things, so this view was jaw-dropping. Lights twinkled across the horizon and cars passed on the street 1,353 feet below us. It was amazing. After taking in the view, the photographer began to take pictures of us in different poses.
On the fourth picture, Josh gets on one knee, opens a box with the most perfect ring in it, and says “Ashley Elizabeth, will you marry me?” I of course said “YES!”
After the proposal and some happy tears, Josh had one more surprise for me. Our absolute favorite pizza is Giordano’s. So, Josh had rented out the entire Skydeck floor and had a table set up in front of the glass ledge for us to enjoy Giordano’s deep dish pizza in the sky! (What they call “Pie In The Sky”).
June 4th, 2015 started out normal, but left me dreaming in the clouds. It was the most perfect proposal I could have ever imagined, and I cannot wait to marry the best man I could have ever imagined!!
