How We Met
Our love story started the way a lot of stories begin these days. We matched online on OKCupid in April 2013 to be exact. After a month of talking and Greg being persistent on dinner and a movie, I finally gave into his charm.
That first date was the longest one I’ve ever been on but it went by in a blink of an eye. He made me laugh and smile the hardest on that first date and I haven’t stopped since.
We casually dated for a year, until we decided to get our acts together and make it official with one another. Good thing we smart
Fast forward to 2015, Greg was moving to Rhode Island to open a New Balance store. I wondered if he would ask me to move with him, granted at the time we were living in Connecticut so it wasn’t far.
But I couldn’t imagine a life without Greg in it everyday. Summer of 2015 luckily both our doubts were diminished. His were that I wouldn’t say yes to moving with him and mine were that he wouldn’t ask me.
By October we were making our home together in Rhode Island. We were having the most fun exploring what our new state had to offer. Exploring beaches and breweries and new restaurants together.
how they asked
We had been talking about getting engaged for the last 6 months. So I knew it was coming, I just didn’t know when and where. But Greg had it all happening behind the scenes.
He kept teasing me for months on end, “oh your going to be SO surprised, when I pop the question” He gave me the clue that it would happen before the end of the year and not on a holiday or my birthday, which happens to be December 20th. His famous quote was, ” Ashley, I’m going to make an ordinary day special.”
We had a vacation planned for Disney World Dec 14th-21st, so naturally I thought that is when he is going to do it. He think he has me fooled, ha! Well little did I know he had me more than fooled.
Greg runs the New Balance in Rhode Island, so the holiday season becomes a hectic time in our house. On December 5th, 2016, he told me he wanted to take me out to dinner after work. That it was one of the only nights we had really free before vacation and the holidays.
I thought it was such a good and thoughtful idea. I got home that night and thought okay I have a few hours to myself before Greg gets out of work and we go out. I walk through our front door and there is Greg sitting at our kitchen table.
I was shocked to see him because his car wasn’t in front of our condo. He told me he parked in guest parking because he wanted to surprise me with him getting home from “work” early.
We ended up going to one of our favorite sushi places in Providence, Jackys. The food is amazing and the views are even better! We went there last year for my birthday, so Greg made it seem like we were continuing a birthday tradition.
He was calm, cool and collected the whole time at dinner. He suggested after dinner we walk down by the water, where they usually hold Waterfire, it was a gorgeous night so I thought why not. We started walking and we paused to look at the skyline.
I said to Greg, “isnt this just so beautiful?” He replied with, “not as beautiful as this.” I whipped around and there was Greg with the box open and he slowly got down on one knee. I put my hands over my mouth and kept repeating what while crying hysterically.
He told me he had a whole speech prepared but couldn’t say it in this moment because he was also crying. He told me he loved me more than anything in this life and he wanted to know if I would marry him. Which I’m pretty sure I screamed yes! He slipped the ring on my finger and I covered his face in kisses.
Come to find out Greg took the day off of work to pick up the ring. He also showed my sister and parents the ring and asked them officially to marry me. He also called his siblings to let them know he would be proposing and to not tell me anything!
After he proposed we told our families and close friends on the way home the good news! When we got home we popped a BIG bottle of champagne and Greg read me his speech over two glasses of bubbly.
To which we both cried again! I think I cried on and off for hours that night. Best night of our lives, so far on this journey together. We can’t wait to have forever together. OH and Greg kept his promise he made an ordinary day special!
A random Monday night easily became my favorite night in history.
