Ashley and Eric
How We Met
Eric and I met in a bar of all places when I was out with a group of Younglife friends and he was out with his buddies. My best friend Marisa introduced us since she had studied abroad with Eric’s housemate and met him from some dinners at their place. We shook hands and moved on with our evenings. At the time we were both interested in other people and didn’t think much of it.
A few months later we found ourselves at a mutual friends birthday party where we were ‘coincidentally’ teamed up to play a round of mini golf. I thought it was a coincidence but Eric later told me he had purposefully wrote our names next to each other since he thought I was cute (I thought he was too but didn’t expect him to notice me!). We chatted throughout the evening and realized we had more in common than we thought. As it turned out we both were training to run a half marathon in the fall. We left the evening and I found a Facebook message from Eric a few days later asking if we could go on a run together and chat about training plans for our respective half marathons since it was his 1st and my 5th. In my mind this was no big deal, not a date. In Eric’s mind he was trying to get to know me better and see if we could be a good match. We ran and grabbed dinner to discuss training plans. I even insisted on paying for my own meal that night to prove it wasn’t a date but after that first run we went for 4 more training runs that led to dinners, movies and me realizing that we were in fact dating.
how they asked
Fast forward to a year and a half later. Eric’s birthday was approaching on January 15th and I had the day off of school so I asked him what he wanted to do. We’re both very social so I figured we might want to get a group together for dinner or something. To my surprise Eric asked if we could go to his favorite diner and snowshoe for the day. We had gone on a few snowshoeing adventures before so I thought nothing of it. On his birthday we left early and headed out for Steven’s pass to a shorter but steep snowshoe called Skyline Lake. Eric had done this one before but I had not and he raved about how pretty it was at the top. We stopped at the diner on our way there and ended up having to wait a long time for our table. Little did I know that Eric had been texting the photographer and giving them some extra time to get things all set up!
We ate breakfast and continued on our way up to the mountain. We started the snowshoe and Eric was going unusually slow which gave me pause. I remember even asking him if he was feeling okay because we were taking our time. He said he just needed some water and we stopped at a tower making me think maybe it will happen today! Much to my dismay he pulled out his water bottle and after a minute or two we continued on. I figured I would be waiting a while longer so set the proposal aside in my mind and moved on with our fun day. Once we got to the top we started hiking around the lake and slowly red rose petals began to appear across the fresh snow. That was the moment I knew the proposal was going to happen. Eric looked at me and said, “Do you know who these might be for?” with a wink. I giggled and we continued along the rose petal path to a little area in some trees where there were more rose petals and Eric’s guitar.
I was so excited. From there he played me our song that he had sent me after our first kiss and proceeded to tell me all the things he loved about me and why we make a great fit. He got down on one knee and I said YES!
After the proposal we drove back to his parents house where we were surrounded by both our families and closest friends waiting to celebrate us! It was such a special day and one I will never forget.
