How We Met
Corey and I met when we were nine at a New Years Eve party, our families had a mutual friend. I’ll never forget the first time I saw him, we locked eyes through a basement window and it felt like the world stood still. I had this unbelievable wave of electricity surging through me in that moment, I’ve still never felt that way with anyone else. We became good friends from the party on- we would go to the movies together, ride our bikes to a local park and find pretty much any excuse to talk on the phone after school. As the years went on I fell more and more in love with Corey, though we still remained only friends. Time flew by and before we knew it we were in high school, then college, then “real life”. We had always kept in touch and I felt myself gravitating towards him whenever “life happened”.
I’ll never forget the day he told me he was relocating to California for a job, I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. I thought my life was over and that I would never have a chance to be with him (which was all I had ever wanted). We planned a trip for me to visit him, I even purchased a flight. Sadly that trip never happened because his step dad (and huge figure in his life) had a brain stem stroke the day before I was supposed to fly out. Another year passed until I found out he was moving back to Rhode Island where we grew up and I had decided I wasn’t going to let him go this time. I had him over my apartment and we laughed all night, I was right back at the movies circa 2001. After a few months we made the decision to be together once and for all and I’ve felt that electricity ever since.
how they asked
We love to go hiking, travel to other countries and explore new and exciting places. Where we live there’s this incredible botanical garden, we tried to visit last year but it was closed for an event (go figure). Corey told me weeks before the proposal that he was taking me somewhere special that I had always wanted to visit. He even tried to pick out my dress and went shopping for a new outfit. I knew something was up because well I’m a wannabe investigator and I’ve known him almost our entire lives!
The day of the proposal he said he needed to drive (which never happens). When we got to the botanical gardens I was excited and also soooo anxious. We walked through the main lobby of the botanical garden, to four other green house rooms. When we reached the end we circled back to the front entrance. When I turned the corner I saw the gold lettered balloons that spelled “Marry Me”.
There were lanterns and flower petals leading up to the balloons and a sign that said “and so the adventure begins” #sms98 (soulmates since 98’…..the year we met).
The decorations were accompanied by, a professional photographer, my sister, my best friend, Corey’s mom and her husband. They had been hiding in a small tent when we originally entered the lobby and set up the decorations while we were walking around the remaining portions of the building. After the gardens we all drove to Blu On The Water, a restaurant we both love where my family and friends waited to celebrate.
