How We Met

Craig and I met online using in August of 2015.

I had just moved to Grand Rapids, MI for work and he had come back to be closer to family.

Craig messaged me first and after a week or so of back and forth, we agreed to meet for lunch at a Thai place in our Downtown Market. We talked for a few hours about sports, movies, B1 traveling, our families, our our outlook on life, and our hopes and dreams.

After lunch, we didn’t want the date to end, so Craig took me to meet his beautiful black lab named Kobe (smooth move). To welcome me to Michigan, he got me a Detroit Tigers hat and brought me up to the rooftop with the most beautiful view of the city.

When he brought be back to my car, I asked for a second date and the rest is history.

how they asked

I went to school at the University of Iowa on a full-athletic scholarship to compete for the gymnastics team. The sport was my entire life and made me who I am today. Craig knows how much I love my school and knew it would be the perfect spot to ask me to spend forever with him.

We were meeting my family for the Iowa vs. Ohio State football game that weekend and I had arranged to come in to the gymnastics practice beforehand to say “hi to my coach. She told me to come a little early to help her shoot an alumni video to promote the team. I would later learn the video was just a trick she and Craig had cooked up to get me into the gym with my hair and makeup done. Saturday, I arrived at the gym with Craig and family in tow.

Once we started shooting, the team started bringing me yellow roses one by one. As I kept answering questions for the video, I saw Craig separate himself from the crowd and walk towards me. A month or so before, we had to put our black lab down and we were both devastated. Putting Kobe down coincided with our 2 year anniversary as well as my big work promotion, but we were too sad and focused on our pup to do anything special for one another. Craig told me because we didn’t get to celebrate, he wanted to get everyone together.

He handed me a shirt that once I unrolled it, turned out to be a white Iowa Football jersey with his last name “Skinner” on the back. That’s when he got down on one knee and asked me to spend our lives together.

Later in the day, my whole family got a surprise tour of the press boxes at Kinnick Stadium complete with champagne and treats. Later unranked Iowa went on to beat #3 Ohio State a whopping 55-28.
