How We Met
Matt and I met in college at UMass Amherst. I was a freshman and he was a junior! We had actually first met each other on my college visit the year before. We talked for a long time about how we both played lacrosse, were both twins and how we grew up just a few towns from each other. Little did I know I would start falling for him then. No numbers were exchanged or anything, we were just left with the memory of that night. I went back to my final days of high school and would find myself thinking of him from time to time. Fast forward to the first week of college, there he was! We began talking and soon everything started to fall into place.
How They Asked
Saturday morning I woke up excited to head to UMass for our annual alumni game. Kate and I played D1 lacrosse UMass Amherst for all 4 years.
To set the scene, Garber is a historic field, one in which my dad actually played lacrosse on too, back when he was at Brown! It is set on campus and is surrounded by kids walking to and from class. Matt played lacrosse at UMass too! We both spent countless hours on the field, as well as UMass, in general, is where we both met.
As Kate and I walked up to the gates at Garber Field to grab our annual picture in front of the gates Kate had told me to stand there quickly before the game started. As I walked over to stand there Matt appeared from behind the gates. I immediately started crying and shaking as I walked over to hug him! I was so shocked to see him, as I thought he was back in Virginia. When he walked over he had the biggest smile I’ve ever seen on his face. After a few words, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him and of course, I said YES!
It was so special because seconds later I was hugging my sister Kate, who helped coordinate with Matt, my parents and best friend from college. A few minutes later the UMass band appeared and started playing and the girls’ lacrosse team was walking through the gates and onto the field. The timing was incredible because for those few moments when Matt proposed it was silent and felt as though we were the only ones around.
Matt and I met 7 years ago at UMass, from that first moment everything was different. I knew he was the one then and now I can’t wait to spend forever with him.
