How We Met
Matthew and I met the summer after I graduated from High School in 2013 at Pismo Beach. I was at the beach to celebrate the Fourth of July with my family. I remember walking around with a group of girls hoping his group of guy friends would talk to us. In all reality, I thought this was silly because I was going to Azusa Pacific University in the Fall to find my husband. When Matthew and I talked that night we instantly started laughing and joking but I didn’t think much of it.
A few weeks later he commented on one of my Instagram pictures giving me his number. The texts turned into calls and the calls turned into FaceTimes. He wanted to come to visit but I was scared. I had so many insecurities at this time and I was afraid of being rejected, not being good enough or healthy enough. At this time Matthew was also having car troubles and I wasn’t sure if he would be able to make the trip to visit me. So when I left to my summer mission trip to Mexico that summer I prayed for one week that if this was the man God had for me he would make it clear. When I returned I had so many texts from Matthew saying how much he missed me & how he wanted to come over the next day. Matthew drove over the next day and took me to Malibu and met my whole family.
The rest is history… I’ve never seen a man care so much for strangers. He moved all my families furniture up in our third story apartment, he took my little sister to the pool and he cooked for us. Matthew is everything I prayed for and more.
How They Asked
Matthew and I had plans to take nice pictures by the beach. I did not think anything of this because we are both into photography and often do photo shoots. I didn’t realize he had an amazing day full of surprises planned for me. When we arrived I saw a beautiful alter on a cliff directly overlooking the beach. I was being guided to a cliff overlooking the beach where we met almost six years ago.
This was the alter my future husband had built for me for our wedding along with a cross that was welded for me with our names on it. He got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. Words cannot describe the joy, peace, and excitement that I felt at this moment. He told me that I’ve always loved and supported him and that I’m going to be a soldiers wife and we both cried.
We enjoyed our time taking pictures on the beach then we went out to dinner. I had been told it was my cousins birthday dinner but little did I know it was a surprise engagement party with all my friends and family. I enjoyed good food, beautiful decor and celebrating with seventy of my loved ones.
The surprises did not stop there, Matthew created a video with all of my family who could not make it congratulating us! Matthew is currently away chasing his dream job in the U.S. Army right now and I miss him every day. I always come back to this day and I am reminded how much he loves me. Matthew goes above and beyond every day to show me I am loved and I can’t wait to love him for the rest of my life.
