How We Met: Anthony and I met in grad school – we are both working on our PhDs in Psychology. We were both skeptics, firm disbelievers in the idea of “falling in love.” But we were drawn to each other as soon as we met, and after over 100 emails went back and forth, he finally asked me if we could just talk in person. We knew right away that we had a connection and that no one else could understand us the way we just naturally understood each other. So three marathon conversations later, we finally admitted to each other how we felt and what we wanted. Basically, we admitted we had fallen in love.
how they asked: Anthony and I had already started thinking about getting married before he proposed, but he really wanted a specific diamond for my engagement ring. The problem was that that diamond was part of his father’s prized collection. So after weeks of Anthony scheming and pleading, he finally got his dad to sell him a beautiful, rare, flawless champagne diamond.
The very next morning, I was at a friend’s house, and Anthony picked me up and drove us straight to the jeweler where he had already picked out the perfect setting. We got there just in time to set the diamond and make sure it fit me, but he wouldn’t let me have it yet. I was a obviously a bit bummed, so I wasn’t even paying attention to where we were driving. It turned out that he was driving us to the spot where we had had our first “date” and where we had sat in my car talking for hours (in fact, luck had it that he actually parked in the exact same parking spot!).
So we got out of the car to go into the restaurant (one of our favorites), and Anthony said, “Hold on I forgot something.” I turned around and he got down on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked me to please spend the rest of my life with him. I said yes, kissed him, and then sobbed uncontrollably. (Sort of embarrassing since I KNEW the ring was in his pocket!) Once I stopped crying, I admired my ring a bit, and then we went to eat and celebrate. Later I called my mom and sisters and gushed about my ring, and then we went to visit his family to tell them the good news!
There are no pictures of our proposal because it was a moment just for us – the most special moment ever. Plus, I’m pretty glad there aren’t any pictures of me sobbing in a parking lot!
