How We Met
Ryan and I met our freshman year in college at Michigan State University. We had a few classes together, and always seemed to bump into each other when we were out at night with our friends. At the end of our first semester, I finished up my last final of the week (also on my birthday!) and stood up to turn in my test. I saw Ryan coming up right behind me to turn in his test and he wished me a happy birthday and asked me out on our first date. I remember thinking “What perfect timing!” but he later admitted he skipped the last few questions on his exam so he could walk with me. Don’t worry – he still passed the class! We have been together just over 5 years now, and through many periods of long distance due to my career, but we’ve never flinched once. I’ve been convinced since meeting in 2010 that he is my soulmate.
how they asked
Ryan and I had a trip planned to Traverse City, MI – something we have done a few times before. It is our dream city to live in, right on the beautiful bay. The first full day we were there, we went to Empire beach for some Stand Up Paddle boarding! While out in the water, he told me he had made dinner reservations for that night! I was ecstatic, but trying to hold it together in case I was psyching myself up for no reason. We got back later than expected that afternoon and had to rush to get showered and dressed so we could walk to dinner. Naturally, we were running late for the reservations. While passing the bay, Ryan wanted to go walk down the dock. I was trying to find any reason to not go down the dock and get to dinner since we were already late! But I followed along – it’s not out of the norm for him to want to walk to see the water or get a picture on the bay. While we were walking, we saw a boat called “Quiet Time”. Ryan joked “hey that sounds like your kind of boat!” poking fun at me because I frequently need a little quiet time to myself.
I responded “yeah that does sound like my kind of boat!” to which he responds “That is your boat!”….I somehow still did not make a connection until we got up to the boat and Ryan yells out hello to the captain!
At that point I froze, and immediately started crying. Ryan helped me onto the sailboat that he rented for the evening, and the captain and his wife greeted us with wine. We spent two hours sailing the bay at sunset – we even got to steer the boat! We took pictures all through out, but at sunset the captain wanted our picture right by the sunset. As he got up there, Ryan got down on one knee and proposed.
I was crying, laughing, and shaking – which i’m not sure if it was from “sea legs” or from the emotions.
Once we got a few more pictures, the captain sailed us to the opposite side of the bay where we were getting dropped off for our dinner reservations.
As we got in the dingy to go to shore, Ryan was waving at shore, and then the group waved back! Once I realized my whole family and Ryan’s family had surprised us on shore, I lost it again. There were so many surprises I couldn’t take it!
My family was supposed to be at a family friend’s wedding, and my sister and brother-in-law were supposed to be stuck in New Jersey because of hurricane Hermine! I was so excited they were there to celebrate with us the rest of the night. It was by far the best night of my life, and I still can’t believe how much of a surprise it was. It was above and beyond anything I could have dreamt of!
