How We Met
It was January of 2014 and I was on a break from a toxic relationship. I spotted an ad for a dating app and decided to give it a try. It was basically Tinder but wasn’t restricted to your area. I did some swiping, made some matches, but never really bothered to message anyone. I had kind of forgotten about the app for a little while but received a message one night that caught my attention. His name was Justin, a University student who seemed well-traveled, and confident, but also kind of a computer nerd. The only problem was that he was *literally* 1000 miles away. I responded anyway, and after a bit of playful banter, we stayed up all night chatting and getting to know each other. There was an indescribable connection that neither of us had experienced before, especially considering there was so much distance between us. We continued talking for a couple of weeks and in that time he had asked about the Universities in my area and what they were like. After a little research, he discovered that the University in my city offered his dream program that wasn’t offered at any other University near him. He ended up applying a few weeks later, but at that time I had gotten back with my ex, and Justin and I had stopped talking. Fast forward a couple of months and I get a message from him letting me know that he had applied, been accepted, and would be MOVING to my city in a few months. He knew I was back with my ex, but hoped we could still at least get the chance to meet in person. We texted here and there over the summer months, and in that time he had met a new girl through a University Facebook group for the incoming class. September rolls around, and we finally got the chance to meet in person for the first time.
We later admitted that the connection was stronger than ever that night, but at the time we kind of friend-zoned each other😅With him exploring his new relationship and I still in my toxic one, we remained friends and helped each other through the tough times. Being each other’s support system made us closer than ever, but once I finally broke off my previous relationship for good, and the girl he was seeing continued to play games with him, there was a noticeable shift in our relationship. Things between us started to get flirty again, but I had been in my previous relationship since high school and knew that I needed time to figure out who I was outside of it. We both lived the single life for a while until we were ready to finally let ourselves love each other. January 26, 2016, he asked me to be his girlfriend.
How They Asked
It was New Year’s Eve, and we were in his hometown visiting his family as we always do around the holidays. It’s a bit of a tradition for Justin’s friends to all come over to his parent’s place to celebrate New Years’, so nothing was out of the ordinary. We spent the afternoon buying decorations, food, etc. with a couple of friends, and one even sneakily convinced me to buy a new shirt for the occasion (thanks, Jade😉). The evening rolls around, and after we finished getting ready Justin was particularly keen on taking some selfies, which is definitely out of the ordinary, but I decided not to question it.
The night went on like normal with games and drinks, waiting for the ball to drop. Justin’s parents had gone out for the evening but showed up back home before midnight which I thought was odd for New Year’s Eve, but again I brushed it off.5 minutes before the ball is set to drop Justin begins to make a toast to all of his friends about the last decade of friendship. He told me he wanted to do this, so it wasn’t a surprise. Little did I know I was in for the biggest surprise of my life…He finishes his toast and everyone drinks, but Justin kept talking. As I started to process the words that were coming out of his mouth my body went completely numb. He asked me to stand up, and I couldn’t.
I think I blacked out to be completely honest, but I managed to get up and walk over to him. He spoke about the wild ride our relationship has been, and how he doesn’t know what he would be doing right now if we had never met. I’m so glad it was captured on video because I definitely blacked out for this part. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Apparently, my whole body stopped functioning because I couldn’t talk to either. I let out an unattractive sob, before finally managing to muster up a nod. Definitely, the best possible way to RING in the new year!
