Emily and Travis
Ian and I met on a blind date. He had recently moved to town and it worked out that the only free night we both had was on a Sunday, so we went out for pizza. I was so nervous to go on a blind date, and convinced myself I would get ditched. We agreed to meet at the restaurant and I just remember coming around the corner into the dining area to see him sitting in the booth. I knew it was him the second I saw him. He looked nervous too, and I felt such a relief. Dinner went great, but it quickly came to an end. When we were getting ready to leave the restaurant, Ian asked if I wanted to go next door and grab a drink and visit a while longer. As the evening was ending, my nerves were coming back. I was hoping he was having as good of time as I was, but I didn’t know what to expect. When he walked me out to leave we were talking and he asked for my number! I gave it to him and we parted ways. I felt like a giddy school girl the whole way home. I had such a huge crush on him!
Our second date was the following weekend. We went out to a local restaurant I had been wanting to try. After dinner we went out for drinks and spent the entire time completely wrapped up in talking to each other. When we left that night, we blasted the radio and sang along at the top of our lungs the whole way home. It was one of the best nights! By the end of the second date I was still trying to win him over and Ian said he already knew he was going to spend the rest of his life with me. Things just got better from there!
Ian and I had plans to go out of town for the weekend and visit friends of mine. I had a busy week at work and was so excited to get away. When I was packing my stuff the night before, Ian casually mentioned taking a different way home than we would normally travel to try a hiking spot in Southern IL. It was a place I had wanted to visit so I agreed it would be a good opportunity if we were already in the area.
The weekend went great! I was so busy catching up with my friends and having a great time that I didn’t even notice if Ian was acting differently. When we left to head home we still had plenty of time that I even convinced him to make an extra stop along the way to see my college campus. When we finally hit the road to head out of town, I had some work to do on my computer while we were driving. Luckily I finished up just as we were getting near Inspiration Point, the place we wanted to visit for our hike.
We got there and parked, changed shoes, and grabbed a water bottle. I was still talking his ear off about everything from our weekend. We hiked the trail up to the point on the edge of the cliff. It was such a beautiful day and the view was breathtaking. We looked around and took some pictures. It was great because we were the only people up there at the time.
As we were looking around and over the edge, I mentioned leaning too far over made me nervous. After I said this, Ian grabbed my hand and said, “If that makes you nervous, then this really will.” Still holding my hand he got down on one knee and held up the most beautiful ring! He told me how excited he was to spend our lives together and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes!!
It was such a surprise and the perfect setting for us. We sat and talked for a while. Finally there was another family on their way up the trail so we decided to head back down. I was still shaking from excitement by the time we got to the end of the trail. We had talked about getting married and knew we wanted the same things in life, but I had no idea we would get engaged that day.
It is so great when the right person comes into your life and everything just works out. We are so excited to build a future together and share each others dreams and accomplishments!
