How We Met
It was my freshman year of college at Taylor University, in a small town called Upland, Indiana. I remember being so nervous for my first day of classes as I was coming from Pasadena, California and this was something new. Little did I know that I would meet my future husband in my first class. We were both going into our English class and I remember seeing him and loving his smile and his laugh. For some reason we became friends by competing on who would get a better grade in the class, so for the whole semester we would raise our hands constantly and look at each other when our professor would give us good feedback. We “officially” met the next semester when we had another class together, we sat next to each other and we became friends. We started our friendship by him meeting my other girlfriends and we would all do things together, like going to our towns playground and go on the merry-go-round while talking about our day, riding bikes at midnight, and watching movies in a classroom. Little did I know that he would be the man I would spend the rest of my life with.
how they asked
Fast forward four years later, we were on our way to California from Indiana where he was going to meet my whole family for the first time. I was so excited for my whole family to meet the love of my life + my best friend. We got there and spent one day with my mom, grandma, and baby sister. The next day, we were on our way to our one week alone vacation to Newport Beach, CA. We had plans to go parasailing in Catalina, walks on the beach and everything. Before our adventure started, he had been talking about going on this long walk on the beach. I knew something was going on because he kept saying, “we need to see the sunset honey, you will love it!” I remember thinking to myself, “why does it have to be at sunset? I am from here and I have seen it before…?”
It took me a little while to get ready because in my head I thought he was planning a little birthday party for me, as my birthday was a week away… I got ready and off we went to a spot in Newport Beach. We got to the parking lot and I turn around to see him texting and he seems really nervous, I asked him, “is everything okay?” he said, “yeah, I am just texting my mom” I giggled and thought to myself… why is he nervous while he is texting his mom?
He finished texting his “mom” and we started walking down this aisle down to the beach. His hands got a little clammy and he started shaking a little… I just thought he was cold… a few steps later I see candles shaped as a heart!
He grabs my hand and pulls me closer to the heart I said, “honey, don’t because this is for someone!” He started laughing and says, “It’s for you.” He pulls me into the middle of the heart and goes down on one knee and asked me to MARRY HIM. I was so shocked and I said “YES!” I just started laughing and hugged him quickly. I hear the cameras going off and the only thing I thought was “Andrea, you cannot ugly cry right now! Don’t ugly cry!” I looked at him and I just never felt so much love in that moment. His hug was the only thing I wanted at that moment while I was contemplating on crying. Looking at the man that I was always praying for was right in front of me asking me the question that I used to dream about. That moment in the middle of the heart, I knew the this was the man that I will be growing old and wrinkly with. I always dreamt of this moment and I am so happy that I got to live it with the best man in this world.
