how they asked
Anders and I had been praying about marriage for about four months because we really felt like it had been put on our hearts. We have been together for over four years so by this time we were sure that this was the path that we were meant to be on. There was no doubt in my mind that he was the one for me. One thing you should know about me is that I am incredibly hard to surprise because I pretty much try to plan out every detail of our lives. Also because my whole family is full of terrible secret keepers. I figured I would know when it was going to happen because they would start acting weird, or I would get the information out of my sister. But my sister was “playing dumb” very well, and my dad had me convinced that Anders hadn’t even asked him for permission yet. I know that its old fashioned, but my dad is a huge part of my life so this was really important to me. I was pretty certain that if he was going to propose soon, it would be on Christmas. He is so family oriented, that it made sense to me that he would do it on the holiday that we always spend with both of our families. Well, the holiday came and passed and nothing happened. So when he arranged for us to go on a hike a couple days later I thought nothing of it.
Hiking together has kind of been our thing ever since it became an essential part of my recovery from an eating disorder I developed in high school. He is the only one that I confided in about it, and he supported me and encouraged me every step of the way. He knows how important hiking is for my emotional and mental health, so he was always more than willing to join me. On December 27th we climbed to the top of a tiny mountaintop lookout on a perfect winter day. I had no idea that this would be the hike that would change my life forever.
One minute we were smiling for a picture and the next minute I looked over to see the love of my life down on one knee. He was so adorable and nervous, he barely managed to squeak out the words, “Will you marry me?”. And of course I screamed, “YES!”. It made it even more sister and his brother were there, and caught everything on camera. Anders has a heart of pure gold, and does everything in his power to make me feel loved and valued and worthy on a daily basis. He planned this day more elaborately and more perfectly than I could have ever imagined. I am so ready to see where this journey takes us.
