Amy and Josh's Disney Proposal
How we met: I always tell people that I met Josh in Kindergarten. We went to the same elementary school, middle school, and graduated high school together in 2001. His grandmother was even my 5th grade teacher. In high school, we had a class together, but didn’t talk. I’m loud and outgoing. Josh is purposeful when he speaks and more reserved. He always jokes that he tried to talk to me in high school and I wouldn’t talk to him. I think it was the other way around! Also, for the majority of our lives, our families owned businesses next door to each other in our small town. We always knew each other, but were never really friends.
In 2009, I had taken a severance package and quit my job. I was hanging out while my family sold their business. I didn’t know what was going to happen next with my life, but I assumed I would move away. Around Christmas, I decided to stop in Josh’s family business to purchase a gift. I saw Josh working there, he gave me a small wave, and I ran out of his store way faster than I should. Something about him intrigued me and we connected on Facebook. We would talk on and off through instant messenger. In January, I finally went to his house. We would hang out some weeks more than others. I was completely falling for him. In October 2010, we officially started dating and I was in love with him. Our personalities may be extremely different, but our values are the same. I couldn’t imagine a life without him. He prays with me, keeps me laughing, and is always my voice of reason. The only thing I would do different is make him my high school sweetheart, but not many people can say they met the man of their dreams when they were 5!
how they asked: Josh and I LOVE Walt Disney World. He took me for my first time, and we have continued to go back yearly for our vacation. When we planned our trip for March 2013, I didn’t think much about it. Josh made reservations at Victoria and Albert’s in The Grand Floridian. We enjoy fine dining, so I knew this was a special place, but assumed the dining experience was the treat. I was totally wrong! Looking back, maybe I should have guessed that he might propose, but I had NO CLUE. Before we left, he went and helped me pick out a dress to wear, but I just assumed it is because he has great taste. Also, that day before dinner, we did all my favorite things. We went to Animal Kingdom (my favorite Disney park), hung out by the pool, then had plenty of time to get ready. I didn’t realize at the time, but I was having my version of the perfect day!
Josh and I both got dressed up and headed to dinner. Once we got to the restaurant, Josh said he had to go to the bathroom. I was trying to get settled since we were a few minutes late for our reservation because of a delay with the ferry and Monorail. When he came back, he handed his phone to the waitress and asked her to take our picture. I thought that was sweet and started to stand up to get our picture taken. The next thing I know, he is down on one knee, telling me he wants to spend the rest of his life with me and opened the ring box.
I instantly grabbed the most beautiful and perfect ring out of the box. The ring fit PERFECTLY and was EXACTLY what I wanted. I was completely shocked and awed. Someone across the restaurant even yelled “Did she say yes?” Of course I did!
One of the best parts is the waitress took great pictures to capture this special memory and she didn’t even know he was going to propose. We ran out and called our families, who were ecstatic. I was so excited that it was hard to finish my amazing dinner, but we enjoyed it. The restaurant even gave us special menus to commemorate the event! In true Josh fashion, he had already thought about wedding dates and we instantly started wedding planning at the dinner table. The rest of our trip, I told anyone that looked my way that I had just gotten engaged. Life with Josh is such an adventure and I can’t wait to see what our future holds!
