How We Met

The year was 2016 when Nate and I first met and we were just starting our sophomore year of college. We attend a relatively small college, so it was surprising that we hadn’t met before. Our paths first crossed while helping with freshman orientation and I remember being immediately attracted to his intelligence and sarcasm. He was always goofing around and had a quick sense of humor that I was drawn to. And it didn’t hurt that he was stinkin’ cute either. We were in a few groups together throughout Welcome Weekend but we didn’t actually speak to each other until a few days later. I was in charge of running a game at the Welcome Back party. Nate came to play my game and offered to get me some of the nachos that they were serving (he even gave me the ones with guac on it, what a keeper.) Our first conversation was the easiest conversation I had ever had with a stranger and after 45 minutes of talking I remember thinking “that boy could be my future husband.”

From that night, I tried to find every excuse to cross paths with him. And sure enough, our paths crossed a lot that semester, even without my scheming. We formed a fast friendship and quickly bonded over our love of Scooby-Doo and The Office. We were always goofing around with each other and Nate looooved to tease me. He was always making me laugh and I knew that there was something special about him. Our friendship continued and we found ourselves spending a lot of time together and I still couldn’t believe how easy it was to talk to him. I had a major crush on him but didn’t know if my feelings were reciprocated. A few months passed and he FINALLY came to his senses and realized he had feelings for me too. (!!!!)

We started dating at the end of the semester and parted ways to our hometowns for winter break. It wasn’t long before we started to miss each other. 2 days after we got home, he called me and we talked on the phone for 5 hours (yes, you read that right 5 HOURS). I remember hanging up and thinking “that conversation felt like 20 minutes.” That was when I knew this relationship was going to be something SO special. From there, things moved pretty quickly. After only a few months of dating, I felt like he knew everything about me. We always had so much fun together and he always knew how to embarrass me in public, specifically at Target. We found ourselves at Target at least once a week and we always joked that it was our weekly date. It mostly consisted of me shopping and Nate calling me “mom” as we walked through the store. The goofiness has always been the most entertaining part of our relationship. There is never a dull moment when you’re spending time with Nathan Wolfrath.

how they asked

October 4th started off as any typical day. I was working downtown when I received a text from a dorm advisor at school (who also worked downtown) that he needed to give me something and asked if I could meet him outside. Thinking nothing of it, I left my desk and went outside to meet him. After a couple minutes of waiting, he was nowhere to be seen. As I was about to go back inside, out pops Nate. I knew exactly what was going to happen when I saw him and my eyes immediately started to well up with tears. He grabbed my hand and we started walking. He told me he had 2 surprises for me. The first, he pulled out a Bluetooth speaker and started playing “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston. This was a typical goofy Nate move and I remember laughing through my excited tears. Then we walked a bit further and he pulled out surprise number 2. He grabbed both my hands and told me how much he loved me and at this point, I was basically sobbing. He started to cry a bit as he pulled out the box and got down on one knee. He asked me to marry him and I of course said YES! I was over the moon excited and could not wait to celebrate. I went back up to my office to ask my supervisor if I could have the lunch hour off and I was greeted with loud cheers. My co-workers had watched the whole thing happen without even knowing it was me. When I turned around they saw who it was and they were so eager to hear all the details. They made the day 10x more special and they even got me a cake to celebrate! For the rest of the day, I think the words “wowie wow” came out of my mouth one hundred times because I could not believe we were engaged. I am beyond excited to spend my life with my best friend and cannot wait for all the goofy adventures to come!
