How We Met

Tyler and I met shortly after I moved to San Diego from Florida in 2014. Tyler had moved from Iowa to San Diego a couple years earlier and we both ended in Ocean Beach, a small bohemian beach community. Tyler and I saw each other in passing multiple times before we were introduced to each other by a mutual friend. My roommate at the time started dating his roommate so we ended up being around each other a lot. Tyler eventually asked me out on a date to Sunset Cliffs which is the same place we will be getting married in September. After dating for awhile, Tyler’s roommate and I decided to switch houses so we could both live with our significant other.

how they asked

In July 2017, Tyler and I planned a trip to Vegas. As far as I knew, it was a chance to get away for a few days and celebrate our anniversary. Tyler had other plans. He had secretly been planning a way to surprise me with the BIG QUESTION for months, using the anniversary as a decoy. When we were driving into Vegas, I looked out the window and thought I saw my parents walking down the street. I immediately said, “Tyler, look there are my parents!”. Tyler kept driving and said “Why would your parents be here and not tell you? Also, its 100 degrees outside, your dad would never come to Vegas at this time.” He was right, my dad would die in that heat. I didn’t get a good enough look at them so I just shrugged it off and forgot about it. We checked into the hotel where I realized Tyler got the awesome suite for us! He said it was our anniversary and I deserve the best. We decided to go get a drink and explore for a little. Tyler said we had to be back at a certain time because he had a surprise for me for our anniversary. We were waiting outside the hotel and limo pulled up, Jokingly I said: “I bet that’s our ride” and sure enough, it was our ride! Once we arrived, I realized we were taking a helicopter ride around Vegas!

It was an amazing ride with beautiful views and the final destination was the bottom of the Grand Canyon! We got off the helicopter and walked around enjoying the breathtaking views when Tyler got down on one knee and popped the question. My immediate response was “Are you serious..?” followed by a very excited YES! After that, we enjoyed lunch and champagne at a picnic table. We loaded back into the helicopter and were off. Once we arrived back, Tyler said he made dinner reservations for us so we got ready and headed to dinner. He said we were going to stop for a drink at a nearby restaurant with a pretty view and as I walked in, I was surprised to see both my parents and his parents there to celebrate with us!

We enjoyed drinks and watched the fountain go off and then headed to a nice steak dinner. We shared the next two days exploring and celebrating with both our parents! I can’t image a better way he could have possibly proposed. It was an amazing and unforgettable experience. I was so excited to have both our parents there to celebrate with us as well!
