How We Met
I was a sophomore in high school and he was a senior. When I first met him, it was at an after party for our school’s formal dance. My friend had been trying to set us both up but I felt so busy with school that I didn’t want to think about it.
But as soon as we met, everything changed. I immediately fell for him, but me being an awkward 16 year old, it took a while for me to actually get comfortable. He’d ask me to hangout almost every day, but I was so scared to I’d decline.
Eventually we started hanging out more and more, and then the rest was history. We’ve been through so much these past 8 years, but I couldn’t imagine how my life could’ve gone without him in it!
How They Asked
The morning of the proposal, we all wake up to an alarm on our phones: TSUNAMI WARNING. All beaches are closed. Well, that’s inconvenient, Shawn was supposed to propose at the beach that day…
We last minute planned on going to dinner that night with my family (or so I thought – their sneaky way of having me get dressed up), but beforehand we wanted to go to the beach to watch the boys fish/watch the sunset. The city beaches ended up opening thankfully, so my friend convinced me we should get ready for dinner beforehand and then we headed down to the beach.
Well, you’d think things couldn’t get any worse? It starts raining! I had just done my hair and makeup so I was urgently trying to get everyone to leave, but little did I know that all of our family and friends were watching us from the park above because he was about to propose.
The rain dies down a little, so I decided we could stay a little longer (I was very confused why no one wanted to leave when it was raining). So I walk down to the waterline to watch Shawn fish, and he “catches something” (tied a weight to the end of his hook) so I run over and start taking a video. He’s yelling at me to “grab the pole! grab the pole!” At first, I hesitate, but then I take it, and as soon as I do I look over and he’s down on one knee. I immediately start bawling and saying “Are you serious?! Is this really happening?!!”
When I say I had no idea, I had NO idea. Getting my nails done on a Friday with my sisters? Typical, we get them done every other week (almost didn’t go because I “knew” Shawn wasn’t going to propose this weekend). My sister bought white dresses and a cute white hat saying they “don’t fit” and asking me if I want to buy them from her? Happens all the time when she goes shopping. A last-minute “fancy dinner” with my family? Not out of the ordinary. My friend made me get dressed before the beach so we could see the sunset and then head straight to dinner? Didn’t even think about it. I don’t know how I didn’t know, but I was so convinced that when the time came I’d be able to read any signs. I thought I was so intuitive and knew everyone too well. I was so wrong and I’m so glad.
There were so many signs, but something in me all day long wasn’t letting me overthink anything (for once in my life).
January 15th was the happiest day of my life and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my favorite person!!!
