How We Met
We met 10 years ago at a party where I was invited and he was not. We were 15 years old, drinking virgin Shirley temples, and we couldn’t stop stealing glances at one another. I finally built the courage to ask him if he was ever going to dance, and the rest was history. As cheesy as it sounds, I felt so comfortable with him. I remember holding his hand as we danced and thinking about how normal and easy it was to be myself with someone I just met. We soon realized we went to the same school and shared the same friends, but we never once heard of one another.
I had never seen him around the school, and he never once saw me. After high school and graduating with our Associates from Miami-Dade college, we decided to move in together after we both transferred to Florida State University to complete our bachelors. We moved into a 243 square foot studio. It was a tiny room where we wanted to kill each other. We pulled through it and lived there for 3 years before we moved into a bigger apartment. We have been together for 10 years and living together for 5 of those years. He is my soul’s counterpart. He really is “my person”.
How They Asked
After celebrating our 10 year anniversary of dating, our friends and family started to get anxious about when the proposal would come. I would always shrug my shoulders and say, “I have no idea”, secretly wondering as well. My fiance made it his mission to make sure I would never suspect a proposal. The months before the proposal, he wasn’t romantic, he bragged how “pointless marriage is”, and he didn’t even suggest I should paint my nails. Every sign that people told me to look for was non-existent. I started to think, maybe this wasn’t going to happen.
I LOVE Disney. I grew up going to Disney every single year with my family. Once I started dating Miguel, my fiance, I started going to Disney with him and our friends. This year we decided to finally splurge and go to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. This was the first time I was ever going, so I was definitely WAY beyond excited. I was so consumed by all the Disney magic, I never once realized how nervous he was during the whole time. I can honestly tell everyone, I had no idea it was coming. We were with another couple who signaled the Disney photographers to take a picture of us.
The next thing I knew, he was kneeling down on one knee. I had no clue he would ask me as the castle was covered in bight snow crystals. As he asked me to marry him, I only saw him as tears fell down his face. Of course, I said yes! There was a huge crowd who circled us from Mainstreet and past the castle. They had nicely created a huge circle just for us. After the shock subsided, I screamed “Finally” and the crowd couldn’t stop laughing.
