How We Met

After both of us went through a handful of bad break ups, we had mutual friends that kept telling both of us that we needed to meet. Being almost 7 years younger than Michael and still in college, thought he was just too old for me so I put it off. I think we both kind of did. In the early part of 2015 I came home from college for the weekend and ended up picking some friends up after a crab feed to then head to a local country bar. Michael happened to be with the group of friends that I was picking up. His first words to me were “this was not how I wanted to meet you.” He did his best to not show that he was heavily intoxicated. We hit it off immediately and talked the entire night. He eventually asked for my number at the end of the night and we went on a date a few weeks later….But that was it.

Being much younger than him, he thought I should go out and have my fun and then come back once I was ready for a real relationship. Due to being the strong willed and the independent girl that I am, I thought it was pretty funny that he had the guts to say that. I also thought there was no way that I would ever “go have my fun and come back to him.” So we spent almost the next year apart. We would chat here and there when we’d run into each other, but that was it. After months had passed, he kept lingering in the back of my head. So I reached out to him and asked when he was going to take me on a date. We’ve been inseparable ever since.

how they asked

He booked a weekend trip but did not tell me where we were going. We ended up at the Sacramento airport and boarded a plane to Seattle, a city on my bucket list. We toured the city the entire day, saw the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, the original Starbucks, and the Big Wheel. He really wanted to get a picture of us as the sun went down at the Pier. We walked towards the Pier and the rain started coming down. I was pretty over it and just wanted to go to dinner, but we made it to the Pier. He asked a couple of musicians that were setting up for the night to take our picture. They replied with “Of course, but you have to listen to a song. It’s customary.” Both of us love music so I was all for it.

They began playing a song, as soon as I realized what song it was, I leaned into Michael and said “how crazy is that!” The song they were playing was “From The Ground Up” by Dan and Shay. A song that has had huge meaning to us since we started dating. I thought nothing of them playing the song, other than a neat coincident. As the song was ending, I was turning towards him to ask if he had any cash to give them a tip. Before I could get the words out he grabbed my hand and got super serious, his hands were shaking. He got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I said Yes.
