Amanda and Jacob
How We Met
Jacob and I met in college at the University of Cincinnati. We both lived on the eighth floor of Dabney Hall, but I was in marching band freshman year so it took us a week or so to finally run into each other. I stopped in one of his friend’s rooms to say hello and meet some new people since I was at band practice in all my spare time, and Jacob heard me and came over to investigate the new girl. We ended up going to the dining hall together with some of his friends and he later told me that he made sure he got to sit next to me. Everyone at the table exchanged numbers with me, and later that day I went home for the weekend. Jacob walked me to the parking garage to grab a pack of water from his car and I drove him back. He boasted to me that he could sing all the lyrics from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. He didn’t know that song was on my CD and he was really embarrassed when I asked him to show me. I drove two hours home, and Jacob texted me later that night to make sure I made it home with no issues, and we didn’t stop texting all weekend. He invited me over to watch a movie in the dorm when I got back. We watched 500 Days of Summer and we joked around the whole time. Finally, he just started tickling me and pinned me down and kissed me. Ever since then we’ve been inseparable.
how they asked
On November 21st, 2015, Jacob and I planned to go to the grocery store to get some potatoes. We were in charge of the mashed potatoes for the “friendsgiving” we were having later that evening. Jacob and I had been discussing getting engaged soon, and I knew he had a ring, but I was not expecting anything that day (or at least not until the Thanksgiving party!) since it was the day before his birthday and he kept insisting it would be a little longer.
We live in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the weather can’t make up its mind, so you never know if you’ll need a coat or a short-sleeved shirt. I asked Jacob what the weather was like, and he looked it up on his phone and told me it was about 42 degrees. Jacob likes to leave the house without a coat on, so I told him he needed to get his coat before we could leave, and he walked into the bedroom to get it off the back of the door. I was anxious to get started on the potatoes, and Jacob was taking an abnormally long time to get his coat from the door, so I called out to him and asked if he was coming, but he didn’t answer. I walked to the bedroom and the door was cracked open, and I pushed it in to see what the heck he was doing, and there he was, in our apartment bedroom, on one knee with my dream ring in his hand. He told me that he had been thinking for a long time where he wanted to propose, and he couldn’t think of a more special place than our first apartment together. I was so excited and shocked that as we were hugging, I said, “I guess I should say ‘yes’ but you haven’t asked yet!”
On the way to the grocery, Jacob told me he thought it was the perfect day to propose since he knew I would be dressed up for the party later and we would have the perfect opportunity to announce the news to all of our friends. Jacob knows I don’t like being the center of attention since it sets off my anxiety, so this was the perfect way to share the news with all of our mutual friends while still being able to share the special moment between just us.
