I’m from Illinois and Luke is from Michigan. We met in college at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.
For the past three years, we have spent Christmas Eve and Christmas morning with my family in Illinois, then pack up the car and drive back to Michigan to spend the day with his family. Because of this, Luke and I started to exchange gifts, stockings, etc. two or three days before Christmas.
We agreed to open gifts on the 23rd, but 5 pm rolled around…then 7 pm…and he still wasn’t home. When I finally heard from him, he informed me that he would be home around 10. Needless to say, I was pretty annoyed by this point. When I asked what he was doing, he said, “Lol don’t worry about it.” Then his phone died.
When he walked in the door around 10:30, I had finished baking and decorating cookies, and was almost halfway through a bottle of red wine. He was acting all happy, ignoring my attitude, and ask if I wanted to open my gifts. I agreed, digging through a stocking he had stuffed full of things that I love. When I thought I was done, he told me that the last part of my present was on our dogs, Kramer and Clark. After reading Kramer’s tag, I’m pretty sure I dropped a few f-bombs, and by the time I read Clark’s, I was so hot and had started sweating so bad that all I could manage to do was ugly cry and nod at Luke, who was kneeling behind me with the ring. Then I got up and ran to our bedroom, ripped my clothes off and yelled, “OMG I’m so hot! I need to change into shorts and a tank top.” Poor Luke yelled back, “so is that a yes?!”.
I later found out that the reason he was so late coming home, was because he had driven two and a half hours to Illinois and back to sit down with my dad and ask for his permission (:
We celebrated by driving to his parents house at midnight to share the news over wine, and then FaceTimed my family from our bed when we got home!
