how we met
I met my fiancé almost six years ago while we were in college. The first night I went to his apartment, I remember looking at this beautiful background picture on his computer. It was a photo of the night sky filled with bright stars and green bands of lights. When I asked him what it was, he told me it was the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights. He explained how he studied about them growing up and how it was his childhood dream to see them, adding that one day he would take me there. We spent that entire night talking about our goals, dreams, and travel aspirations. It was in that moment, I knew that he was the one.
how they asked
After we graduated from college, we decided to travel around the world and turn some of our dreams into reality. It wasn’t until this past December that we decided to search for the Northern Lights. On the last night of our snowboarding trip we booked a photography tour in hopes of seeing the lights. We knew that our chances were up in the air, and that it all depended on a variety of things like the solar activity, weather, etc. of that particular night. A few hours had gone by and our tour was coming to an end. There were no lights in sight.
While waiting in the heated van (it was -22 degrees outside), he asked me if I wanted to go outside one last time to take some photos. I could barely feel my toes at this point, but decided to go anyway. We huddled close together as we waited for our tour guides to set up the camera and lighting.
I heard our tour guide say, “Okay on the count of three.” The moment our tour guide said “three,” my fiancé grabbed my hand and pulled me towards him. I looked over wondering what he was doing and saw that he was now on one knee with a diamond ring in his hand. I couldn’t believe my eyes. When he asked me if I wanted to spend the rest of my life adventuring with him, I said “Yes, of course!!” and kissed him. Within minutes after his proposal, green lights raged across the sky. We stood there screaming in awe at such beauty. Here we were, somewhere in the middle of the arctic circle, making both of our dreams come true. It was the most incredible moment of our lives.
