This Travel-Themed Dallas Proposal Was Out of This World
Allysson Valenzuela and Ndaba Marandure met in September 2018 at the wedding of mutual friends. They started dating two months later, and recently moved in together. We teamed up with The Black Tux and proposal planners to help Ndaba pull off a proposal inspired by the places their love story has taken them—and look stylish while doing it.
Ndaba had the idea of proposing on a bed of roses with a string quartet playing music. They were each born internationally (Allysson in the Dominican Republic and Ndaba in Zimbabwe) and consider themselves avid travelers, so he worked with proposal planners The Yes Girls to personalize the idea even further, with pink and red rose petals laid out on the grass to look like a globe. Hand-painted wooden signs marked meaningful locations from their relationship (like where they first met), including one over Dallas that read, “Where she says YES!”
Ndaba picked a style from The Black Tux with his future fiancée in mind: “[She] has always talked about an emerald green color scheme for our wedding, so when I saw the emerald shawl tuxedo jacket and pants, I knew that was the one,” he says.
Ndada told Allysson to hold the upcoming Sunday for a “super date night; over the top with everything.” That day, her friend took her to get her nails done and transported her to White Rock Lake Park in Dallas, where she waited, blindfolded, for Ndaba. Once everything was set up and the string quartet started playing, Ndaba met up with Allysson, took her hand and removed the blindfold. “I’ve never seen so much joy, confusion and overall awe in one moment,” he says. “It was really beautiful and a memory I’ll cherish.”
Allysson began crying as he walked her over to the floral display. “I explained to her the significance of the design and where we, as lovers, fit in the middle of it all,” he says. “I got on one knee and promised that I would be by her side regardless of what life brings us, that I would work tirelessly to make our lives together what we’ve always dreamed of, and that I would love Allysson recklessly with my whole heart for the rest of my life.”
Ndaba then pulled the ring box out of his sock, and asked Allyson to “be my home forever.” She said “yes,” and the couple celebrated by slow dancing to the live music.
