Allison and James
How We Met: I finally landed (what I thought was) my dream job in federal law enforcement and was headed for the training academy in Virginia. In my academy class, there was James. I was from Philadelphia, he was from Minneapolis. We didn’t exactly click right away, but by the time graduation rolled around, we had become friends. Destined for the same small office in the southwest, we agreed to be roommates along with another one of our classmates. So the three of us moved in in August of 2011. By September, James and I discovered there was more (way more) than just friendship between us. We began dating in secret for the next two years until we left the agency together in June of 2013 and headed to Minneapolis to start a real life together.
how they asked: I’d always wanted to go to Italy. It was my dream destination. So for New Year’s 2014, James said he wanted to take me to Italy, but that he wanted to fly into Paris and spend a night in Paris on our way. I was ecstatic! So for our one night in Paris, we wanted to see the light show at the Eiffel Tower, which is on the hour every hour. Never one to be late, as we got on the train James was compulsively checking his watch. We arrived with minutes to spare and James directed me to what he had decided was the perfect viewing spot. Despite the rain, it was a stunning sight. At the top of the hour, the entire Eiffel Tower began to twinkle and literally took my breath away. Just at that moment, James took both my hands and started telling me how much he loved me. I didn’t want to miss the show, so I was kind of dismissive at first. Then it all clicked and the tears started. As he dropped to one knee, with the Eiffel Tower twinkling in the background, he told me he didn’t ever want to spend a day without me and asked me to be his wife. I’m not sure how many times I said yes as he slipped a ring I later learned he had spent months designing, using some of his grandmother’s diamonds. Lucky for us, some friendly tourists were there and started snapping pictures while it was all happening and emailed them to us later!
