How We Met
Mike and I have known each other since him and his twin sister started school with me in the 6th grade. However, Mike might add that I didn’t know of him until our junior year of high school. His sister and I got to know each other throughout the years, but Mike and I had never connected during school. It wasn’t until prom of our junior that he asked me to be his date in the hallway after school one day.
He had to be quick because I actually had another “prom proposal” waiting at my locker. We decided after he asked that it was best to get to know each other a little before prom so we would be comfortable that night which worked out well considering we had study hall together that year. It wasn’t until that following July after prom that Mike asked me to be his girlfriend on a scavenger hunt at a local park.
how they asked
For Valentine’s day, Mike and I decided, after such a great time on the Southern Belle Riverboat last year, to have dinner on the boat again and Mike told me we were getting a great deal by going early. I was already impressed with Mike for planning our date in advance even though I know he is not a planner. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until we were getting ready for dinner on the boat that night. I got a weird sense that something was going on that Mike was not telling me. We were oddly waiting for specific times to leave his apartment and board the boat, and Mike seemed really distracted by our very romantic date he planned.
I had carried both my gift for him and his gift for me onto the boat that night having no idea until later what would be in his bag for me. After it seemed everyone on the boat had gotten their drinks for dinner, the captain called us to his deck to check our tickets.
Not to mention, Mike had just “accidentally” let out that he got our tickets on Groupon, which made me question whether our tickets were real. When we entered the captain’s deck, there was a video camera and Mike got a sweet look in his eyes. He began to talk about the love and patience we have shown throughout our time dating and read to me the definition of love from 1 Corinthians 13. Then the moment I had dreamed of since the day I knew Mike was the one, Mike was down on one knee.
As he opened the ring box to the most beautiful ring I have ever seen and with the most genuine smile on his face, I said yes to spending the rest of my life with the man that not only makes me want to be a better person, but also encourages me, makes me laugh and challenges me daily. After the proposal, my sister’s wedding photographer was there capturing all the action even being weeks away from giving birth! Then before I could catch my breath, Mike surprised me again with friends and family waiting downstairs! It was hard to surprise me after 5 years of dating, but he managed to do it!
