How We Met
I remember sitting in my 7th grade home room class; I was 12 years old. I saw this boy with a bowl cut hairdo and Jnco jeans (remember those!?) and I thought he was so cute. As I got to know him better, I thought he was even cuter. What I liked most about him was that he really made me laugh. We became great friends and eventually became “boyfriend and girlfriend” right before school was out for the Summer. We continued “dating” (AKA remained best friends but held hands as we walked down the school hallways between classes) during 8th grade. We split up during high school when our lives took us in different directions. I was heartbroken, but eventually moved on and so did he. We dated other people, but still remained friends. Once I moved away to college, we weren’t as close as we used to be, but we always kept in touch. During my second year of college I came home for Christmas break and he invited me to hang out with him and some mutual friends. I remember having so much fun with him that night, so we continued to hang out almost every night. And one cold night before Christmas, we were standing in his driveway saying goodbye, and he just leaned in and kissed me. We’ve been together ever since then (2010). So, when people ask us how long we’ve been together, we like to tell them that we started dating in 2003, but went on a “6-year hiatus” from 2004 to 2010 :).
how they asked
It was a Sunday evening in April (2015). I was in grad school, so I was studying for an exam when he called and said he wanted to go out to dinner that night. I didn’t think he was up to anything, because we always go out to dinner on the weekends. After dinner, he asked if I wanted to go on a walk. I still didn’t think anything of this because I always ask him to go on walks with me after I’ve been sitting and studying all day. He ended up taking me to Hoover Middle School (where we met). Again, I STILL didn’t think he was up to anything, because we live right by Hoover so we’ve used it as a destination to walk to before. After walking around the track, we walked up to the front of the school and started reminiscing. We were facing each other, my arms around his neck and his around my back. I smiled and told him that being at Hoover and hugging him like that reminded me of how nervous I used to get when I would hug him goodbye at the end of the school day when we were in middle school. We laughed and made fun of ourselves for being awkward and nervous. And then he smiled and held me closer and said that we’ve gotten a lot better at that. But the strange thing was that he seemed a little nervous in that moment. His heart was racing so fast! I had never felt it beat that fast before. At THAT moment I had a feeling he was up to something. I asked him why his heart was racing, and the next thing I knew he was on one knee, holding a ring, asking me if I would marry him! I said yes, of course :).
