How We Met
Yale and I are high school sweethearts who share the same birthday, two fun facts that people are always shocked to hear. Having dated for nearly 10 years, we essentially grew up together. “Dating” in high school meant hours spent talking on the phone past my bedtime, sneaking hugs in the hallway before class, and accumulating dozens of mixed tapes that I still have to this day. After graduating, we ended up both going to the same college, spent some time apart, but realized that we were far happier together than we were apart. We always knew we were meant for each other being born on the very same day!
how they asked
Yale’s family owns a beautiful horse farm outside of Baltimore, MD, which was (and still is) my favorite place to hang out and get away from the city. Some of my fondest memories have taken place on the farm, which made sense why Yale chose it for the proposal! On a Saturday afternoon in late October, Yale mentioned to me that his brother had planned to have some friends over, and that we should join them. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but this weekend was different.
Our drive from out to the farm is about 30 minutes, and my normally chatty boyfriend was being rather quiet, but held my hand tight the entire ride up. When we arrived, Yale mentioned we should go see the oak tree we planted two summers prior, and to sit up by the pond before we met up with his brother. As we headed towards the tree, Yale walked quietly beside me, with his hand behind my back. We made our way up to the pond and he slowly started to drift behind me. As I stood and observed the tree that we so lovingly cared for the past two years, I felt a tap on my back. I quickly turned around to find Yale down on his knee holding a box with the ring of my dreams! I collapsed into his arms with tears streaming down my face. Of course I said yes! This was the moment I had been dreaming of since the day Yale and I met.
Yale’s second surprise for me was that the friends his brother was having over were actually all of our friends and family, who had traveled near and far to celebrate our engagement! It was the most magical day of my life and one I will never forget.
