How We Met
Garrett and I met at a bar in Tulsa, Oklahoma in July 2012. I was out for a drink with a friend of mine, and he was out celebrating his birthday. My friend, Amanda, and I were sitting outside on the patio when he walked in with his friends. She and I were chatting and laughing and didn’t really notice them come in until a friend of his made fun of my laugh (I can be quite loud), and we turned to see them sitting down at a table near ours. I brushed it off, but a little while later, Amanda and I both needed to go to the restroom, and I decided that it was time to talk to him. I walked over and said that since his friend had made fun of me, he owed me, and needed to watch our table and our purses. He agreed, and when we returned to our table, he told me that since he had done me a favor, he thought I should at least sit with him and tell him my name. After a little convincing from him and my friend, I decided to sit with him and his friends for a minute. We ended up spending the rest of the night hanging out and talking, and have been together ever since.
how they asked
On June 11, 2016, Garrett popped the question!
Earlier in the week, he told me that there was a company picnic for his new job, and that he wanted to go and get to know all of his new co-workers. We already had plans to go to dinner with some friends of ours who were coming into town that evening, so he said we wouldn’t stay at the company picnic long, and that I could just wear what I was planning to wear to dinner that night. We talked all week about the picnic, and I had no idea that anything was up.
When the day of the “company picnic” rolled around, I asked him what time I needed to be ready to go, and he told me 5:00. At about 5:10, he called and said that he was stuck in traffic on the highway, and asked if I could meet him there so that we wouldn’t be late. I agreed and he texted me the address. I drove to the park where he said we were meeting, and when I got there, I noticed balloons on a pedestal in front of the park, but there weren’t many cars in the parking lot. Since I didn’t see his truck, I called to see where he was. He didn’t answer my phone call, but texted me back and said, “balloons.”
At this point, I texted him back and said, “This isn’t a picnic, is it?”
I got out of my car and walked over to the balloons, which had small pictures of us attached to them. There was a letter rolled up next to the balloons, and small bouquet of flowers, which also had pictures of us attached. I unrolled the letter and began to read.
He asked if I had figured out that there was no picnic, and told me that he was sorry for changing the plan on me last minute, but promised that it would get better very soon. The letter went on to tell me things that he loves about me. It ended with him telling me to pick up the flowers, and begin walking towards the bridge, because he had an important question to ask me.
I began walking, and as I did, there were 11 more small bouquets with pictures of us leading me to him. I was crying and my heart was racing all the way there. When I finally got to where he was, he had lined a small path with flowers, and set up a table with chilled champagne, champagne flutes, and a large bouquet.
I was speechless standing in front of him. He began to tell him how beautiful I am, and how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
I said yes!
After the proposal, we celebrated with champagne and took pictures with a photographer that he had hired.
When we were done, he told me that we still had dinner plans with our friends, who knew his plan all along, and were in town just for this, and we headed to dinner. When we got there, I was surprised again! It was not just a small a dinner with a couple of our friends, he had invited several of our family and friends to come celebrate with us!
