How We Met

Joey and I have known each other since middle school! We became great friends in our 7th grade English class; we always used to “flirt” (the only way a 12 year old knew how) by racing each other to class and eating lunch together. Summer of 8th grade, we both expressed we had “crushes” on each other over AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)! As the years went by, we stayed friends (neither of us will admit it but we still had minor “crushes” on each other) but began dating other people as we headed into high school. Throughout high school, we each dated and had long-term relationships. We began hanging out more regularly senior year of high school just as “friends” (we were both single) and one night we were reminiscing about our “Middle School fling” and I, embarrassingly, expressed that it was “never too late”…and here we are, 4 1/2 years later! :)

how they asked

One of my best friends, Morgan and her now-husband, were getting married in South Africa! There was no where else in the world we wanted to be on that day than at their wedding, so we made it happen! We embarked on a 12 day once-in-a-lifetime trip to South Africa! We had the most amazing experiences together, with friends and most importantly- were there to support our friends at their wedding! We went on a 4 day bucket-list Safari, 6 days in the amazingly beautiful Cape Town and 2 days out to the wine lands where they had their wedding!

Once we got to Cape Town, we were able to meet up and enjoy our experiences with Morgan and Migail as well as some other friends from America who were traveling to the wedding. On our 4th day in Cape Town, we met up with two of our friends, Nicole + Kat, to hike Lion’s Head Peak and go see Table Mountain! We hiked for about an hour and a half up the mountain (one of the more rustic hikes I have ever been on) but once we got to the peak, it was totally worth it! 360 degrees of breathtaking views of Cape Town, South Africa.

There is one specific ledge of the peak that has a spectacular view and I remember Joey saying “Let’s climb out on that ledge and get a picture” and I, of course, agreed! I began to climb out on the ledge while he handed our phones to our friends and apparently whispered “I’m about to propose, take a video!” (Thanks Kat + Nicole!). He crawled out on the ledge and we smiled at the camera just as if we were taking a picture. He then turned to me, pulled out the ring, and asked me to marry him.

I said yes, of course!
