How We Met

Travis and I met my last semester in college. We had a few of the same classes (although I didn’t know this until he actually introduced himself at the school gym i.e. how we met)

I had just finished a 45 minute run on the tread mill and was walking out of the gym when I see this hand come into my line of sight. I look up and I see this guy smiling at me. I take my headphones off and he asks “did you finish xyz homework for Mr. Blanks class?” I’m sure I gave him a weird look because in my head I’m thinking, “you’re in my class?”

It wasn’t until a few hallway encounters, a few Facebook messages (yes Facebook), and a few “no sorry I have to wake up early’s” that I finally agreed to hang out with him. The first time we hung out was a late night after my shift at work, so I figured we wouldn’t be more than 30 minutes (what am I going to have in common with a guy that drums and wears cut-off dickies to the gym)? Little did I know 5 hours would go by and every day after that would be spent with him.

how they asked

We planned a week long cruise to Alaska at the beginning of the year to celebrate our 4-year anniversary. It was the first cruise for both of us so we were really excited.

We were a day and a half into our cruise when we landed in Juneau on July 4th.

We had an incredible morning exploring the little town. We took a gondola ride up a beautiful mountain that overlooked the whole city, we sat and watched the 4th of July parade and after, had lunch at an old saloon where we watched a hilarious old man play the piano and crack jokes about old married couples. Everything to me seemed like a normal day on our vacation, until we embarked on our adventure to go dog sledding on the Mendenhall Glacier about 20 minutes outside of Juneau.

We started our journey on this amazing helicopter ride. Pictures don’t do what we saw justice.

We passed through a beautiful mountain range that opened up to a huge camp of 288 Alaskan Huskies right on the glacier. If this wasn’t incredible enough!

We landed on the glacier where we got to walk around the camp and meet all the dogs (they even had 2 adorable puppies that we got to hold). After we met our guide and we got the tutorial we were ready to go sledding! We were with 2 other people on the sled so every couple of minutes we would stop and switch places so we could all see what it was like standing on the sled like a true musher (while the other 3 sat down). We were almost at the end of the track and on our last “switch.” As we were switching our guide asked if we would like to have her take a few pictures with the dogs (obviously!)

I gave her my phone and Travis gave her his go pro and asked if she could take a video as well (I didn’t hear this part, Travis told me afterwards). She took a few pictures from my phone and we were getting ready to take a few more when Travis got off the sled reached into his pocket and asked “can you hold this?” I turn around and before I knew it I had a ring in my hand. I swear it took me a good 30 seconds to process what was actually in my hand. I closed my hand, re-opened it (“Ok this is real”)

He held onto me and told me that he loved me and that he wanted to spend the rest of my life with me (This was what he told me after the fact. In the moment everything went blank and to be honest, I had no idea what he had said). He then got down on one knee and asked “Will you marry me?”

Of course I said yes!

There we were, he had asked, I had said yes, but I still had the ring in my hand. He took the ring from my hands and grabbed my right hand (wrong hand Travis)! When he finally had my left hand in his, he went to put the ring on my finger, but it barely fit. I said “It’s too small!” (oops…probably not the first thing I should’ve said about my ring). When he managed to get the ring on my swollen finger I couldn’t stop staring at it! It was so gorgeous!

After the group we were with realized what was happening they came running over and congratulated us. I think they were as shocked as I was!

It was a whirlwind of emotions. Everything else on that giant glacier had disappeared and we were the only ones there.

I was so surprised and so in shock that throughout the proposal I think I asked Travis 100 times if he was serious! It was the most beautiful and perfect place he could’ve chosen to ask and I’m so thankful that he did :) **Even though the guide didn’t know how to work a go pro and ended up not getting the video!! grrr!!
