How We Met
Derek and I met in the most romantic setting possible…a dating website. We met on OkCupid. After almost losing hope in the website I received a message from Derek, “hey hi hello”. Something about him stuck out. The conversation through texting was easy between the two of us. Never having any awkward moments of not knowing what to say. After a few weeks of talking we decided to meet up for sushi. We still laugh because we both only ordered 1 sushi roll, now we only go out to all you can eat sushi. I knew after the first date this was going to be something special. I called all my friends on the way home from the date telling them all about him. Our first date happened right before thanksgiving. I traveled to my brothers house out of state for the holiday. Derek and I texted the whole time I was away and made plans for a second date as soon as I was back in town. Our second date happened st Caumsett Park and then our for hibachi. We still say hibachi was the most awkward dinner of our lives. We went at an off time and all of the employees lined up and watched us eat since we were the only people in the restaurant. We couldn’t get out of there fast enough. Fast forward a little to Christmas Eve, we had a bunch more dates before this, he even met my parents. The morning of Christmas Eve Derek told me he would be spending it alone. Me coming from an Italian family where Christmas Eve is the biggest day of the year, I told him he had to come to my aunts house. He agreed and came to my aunts and after only knowing each other for a month, he met my entire extended family. The night was perfect. Everyone loved him, I always knew they would. Now almost four years later, we are engaged and living together in Long Beach, NY. It has been the best 4 years our lives.
how they asked
About 2 months before the proposal Derek told me about a work event we had to go to at Planting Fields Arboretum on July 14th. He brought home a flyer from work for the event and everything. I didn’t think anything of it, I just agreed to go. As the day got closer my parents asked us to go out to dinner that night. We agreed, so the plan was to go to the event and then go to my parents house and go out to dinner. The morning of the “event” Derek told me that we had to dress up. Let me say, Derek always dresses up no matter where we go. Me on the other hand, I prefer to be comfortable. So naturally I complained to all my girlfriends about having to dress up that morning. Finally we left for the arboretum all dressed up. It was beautiful out, not a cloud in the sky. We arrived at the arboretum and Derek said he wanted to go to this one specific area. I kept saying he had to call his coworkers because I was worried we were going to miss his event. He kept telling me nobody was answering. Finally we arrived at the spot Derek wanted to go to. He suggested we take a picture since we were dressed up. So he gave my phone to someone and then totally shocked me by getting down on one knee and asking me to marry him. I could not believe it. We were both so so happy. The proposal was the work event. This wasn’t the end of the surprises though. We walked around a little longer. Took a few pictures and then headed to my parents house. I still thought we were going out to dinner. Little did I know, I was walking into a surprise engagement party thrown by Derek and my mom. All of our closet friends and family were there to celebrate. It was perfect. I could not have imagined a proposal more perfect.
