Alexis and Aaron

Alexis and Aaron's Engagement in Koko Head on O'ahu

How We Met

Aaron and I met when I was 16 years old. My family moved in across the street from his in our home town. He was a little bit older than me and I had a boyfriend at the time, so I didn’t pay much attention to him. He would always play outside with my younger brother and sister and ask about me, but that didn’t get him too far!

My mom and aunt owned a sandwich restaurant not too far from our houses which I worked at on the weekend and a few evenings during the week. Next thing I knew, Aaron was hired at the shop and we worked together quite a bit. Again, I never paid much attention to him because I had a boyfriend. Well, one day that boyfriend and I broke up. I remember going into my mom’s room super sad, and she told me to go on a date with Aaron. She said she really liked him and thought he was a “quality kid” (plus my mom and his mom were BFFs). We now know both our families were convinced we would get married one day. So, later that evening, I walked across the street and we went to the mall followed by a sushi dinner.

And that’s how it all started. We spent the Summer of 2013 by each other’s side. Movies, ice cream, parks, the State Fair.. we did it all together.

We ended up going to the University of Hawaii at Mānoa together (Go Bows!) and found our places in Hawaii. When I first moved to O’ahu in August of 2014, my family hiked Koko Head for the first time (without me because, well, lazy). Koko Head crater rises to over 1,000 feet and is nothing but 1,048 steps. A daunting “hike,” as you could imagine. My mom kicked butt on that hike and loved every second of it. But in January of 2015, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away on October 29th, 2016. August 2014 was the first and last time she did that hike.

During this time, Aaron and I had our ups and downs but we always came back to each other. I began hiking Koko Head 2-3 times a week and would listen to my mom’s favorite songs at the top. Aaron would encourage me every single time.

We moved back to our home towns in September 2017 and in February 2018, we found out we were expecting our first child together. It was a bit of a shock, but a welcomed one. Our sweet Penelope James (James is after my mom) was born on October 8th, 2018.

How They Asked

Our families persistently asked when we were going to get engaged after her birth (and let’s be honest, I was asking daily too). We like to visit O’ahu yearly so we planned a trip for our 6 year anniversary in May/June of 2019. My best friend Sierra told me not to get my hopes up and he wasn’t proposing in Hawaii. It was important to me to have her there and she had just graduated from NYU, so I figured since she couldn’t get to Hawaii, he really wasn’t proposing…or was he?

On May 30th, 2019 we decided to hike Koko Head. This time, Aaron wore Penelope on his chest the whole time! Thirty minutes after starting, we were at the top. I went up to see the view and take photos of Aaron and Penelope when Aaron told me we should go to the platform below because it was less crowded. I hear shouting and Aaron told me to turn around, and behind me was my best friend and his best friend. I stand there confused as she tells me to give her my phone and to turn around. When I turn, I see Aaron on one knee, our daughter strapped to his chest on my mom’s favorite hike in her favorite place. I collapse and begin sobbing, obviously! When I finally get the strength to walk over to him, he asks me to be his wife and I can barely say yes because I am crying so hard. It was an obvious yes! We then celebrated with our two best friends on the top of the mountain, popping champagne and admiring my sparkly new ring. Oh yeah, and he had a photographer hike up that mountain just to capture the moment!

It was everything I could imagine and more. Although my mom was not physically there, Aaron made sure she was there in spirit. I cannot wait to be this man’s WIFE!

I knew I didn’t want a diamond, so when I discovered moissanite I fell in love! We love a socially responsible, eco-friendly, family owned company! The True Gem Company based in Texas made all my ring dreams come true.
