How We Met

Gregory and I met while attending Florida State University. Our roommates were dating, so we started seeing each other at social events and parties quite often. The more we hung out the more we both realized there was a connection. We started dating and quickly fell in love. We dated for a year, and then decided to go our separate ways. Gregory moved to Atlanta after college and I moved to Dallas. I would go to Atlanta quite often to visit one of my college friends and would always end up seeing Gregory. We both knew that we still had strong feelings for each other, yet we continued to live our separate lives. After six years of being split up, I was finally honest with myself. I was still in love with Gregory and wanted to be with him. So I visited him in Atlanta and we’ve been inseparable ever since.

how they asked

I kind of suspected that we would get engaged sometime this year, but had no idea when. So I was definitely taken by surprise. We decided to stay in Atlanta for the Fourth of July weekend. Gregory told me that on Saturday we were going to meet up with our friend at a bar called Park Tavern that has a beautiful view of the Atlanta skyline. We got to the bar and had a drink while we waited for our friend to get there. Our friend texted Gregory to tell him he was going to be late, so he suggested we go for a walk around the park. It was hot but beautiful out so a walk sounded nice. We started walking around the park and came up this beautiful area that has a bridge crossing a river with a gazebo. He suggested we go into the gazebo, so we walk in and are standing there for a few seconds.

He then tells me that since he first saw me he has been in love with me and that he’s not perfect, and I’m not perfect, but we’re perfect together, you and me, forever. He always says sweet things, but this definitely seemed different, so I put my drink down. He gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him.

I say yes and he stands back up and asks if I said yes, because he said at that moment he was so nervous he blacked out and didn’t remember what he even said.

At this point he looks over and we see our friend who was supposed to be meeting us at the bar. He was taking photos for us, which turned out beautiful. There was a girl sitting off to the side of the gazebo who asked if we just got engaged. We told her yes and she offered to play us a song on her ukulele (this part was not planned). She played ‘I’m yours’ by Jason Mraz, and that’s when the shock wore off a little and the tears started flowing.
