How We Met
Nick and I met during my freshman year of college. We were in the same biology class and the same major so we saw a lot of each other. We didn’t talk much during my first semester, but I definitely noticed him! It wasn’t until Christmas break of that year that I thought about actually talking to him. With some persuasion from a few friends and my sisters who knew about him, I got up enough courage to message him on Christmas Day. I sent him a “Merry Christmas” through Facebook and was so nervous that he would think it was weird that some girl from school was messaging him! He responded within a few minutes and we kept talking throughout the day. After we got back to school when the break was over, I messaged him to see if he wanted to hang out with a group of friends and watch a movie.
He said yes and it turned out to be a really fun night! A few days later, I was walking back to my dorm after a basketball game and I noticed he was up ahead of me. Oddly enough, it was just the two of us on the long sidewalk. He had turned his head around and saw me from a distance and then the next thing I knew, he was turning around and walking my way. I got super nervous and when he finally got closer, he said to me “I left my hat in the gym so I’m headed back…by the way, the other night was really fun. We should hang out again soon! Do you want to catch a movie?” I nearly died of happiness!
I obviously said that I would love to and we decided to pick one we wanted to see. I ran back into my dorm and told my roommate that we had another date planned. I’m pretty sure we both screaming with excitement! Nick had later told me that he never actually left his hat in the gym, but that he saw me and wanted to jump on the chance to ask me out.
We went on a few more dates and then on February 20, 2015, he asked me to be his girlfriend! The next four years brought many trips, concerts, holidays, family gatherings, 3 nieces, so much amazing food and love that I always prayed I would have!
How They Asked
My family had been planning a vacation during my spring break of 2019. I knew that Nick might not be able to come because his spring break was a different week. Originally we were going to go to Florida and he was going to come for a few days rather than the whole week so that he could still be in class for part of the week. It looked like it was going to work and that he was going to be able to come. Then, in the fall of 2018, my family decided on going on a cruise instead of Florida. This meant that he wouldn’t be able to come because there was no way he could come for only part of the week. I was super bummed but I knew that I would still have an awesome week with my family! Over the next few months, I had asked Nick countless times if he could talk to his professors and see if they’d be willing to work with his schedule and allow him to work ahead so that he could come. Each time, he said that he had already talked to them and they were not able to accommodate him. Still extremely bummed, I decided to try and just accept the fact that he wasn’t coming.
We were scheduled to leave on March 10th for our trip. The weekend of March 8th was the Philadelphia Flower Show, which was a tradition of ours. So, we decided to go and spend the day together on Saturday the 9th before I left for the Bahamas on Sunday the 10th. Our trip was awesome! I remember thinking that I was so glad to spend the day together because I knew I wouldn’t see him for the week. We tried a new cheesesteak place (food is our favorite thing), toured some parts of the city, went to the flower show which was amazing and ended with a trip to the Cheesecake Factory (one of my favorite restaurants). As we were eating dinner, I asked Nick if we were getting engaged soon. We had been together for over 4 years at this point and engagement was something that we openly talked about. We went to look at rings about a year prior so I was always trying to get hints off of him! He never caved to my dismay! He told me that he had a plan and it would happen in the perfect timing (something he would always tell me) and so I just shook my head and ate my burger. He dropped me off after such a fun and memorable day at the hotel my family was staying at. We said our goodbyes and I was ready to have a fun week of vacation with my family!
The next morning as I was getting ready, he texted me that he had picked up a shift at work so he was headed there. He sent me a selfie in his uniform (we’re always sending selfies) and was telling me the weather was so miserable back home! It was March in the Northeast so it wasn’t terribly surprising. I ate breakfast with my parents, sister, brother-in-law and two nieces. As we were getting ready to get the shuttle to the port for our cruise, he sent me a picture of the parking lot at work. It was miserable weather. I knew we wouldn’t talk much that morning because he would be busy at work and we would be getting on the ship. Once we arrived at the port, we waited around for a while to get on. When we were in security, I saw someone that looked very similar to Nick. At first, I thought it was him and I got so excited that he maybe surprised me! But I quickly realized it wasn’t him. As much as I wished he was coming, I knew deep down he wasn’t. He was back home at work.
A few after we got settled on the ship, we started to explore our home for the next week. Eventually, my other sister and her husband arrived at the port. We decided we’d meet them on the pool deck once they got through security. They found us and my sister who works as a YouTuber was telling us how she decided to vlog during our trip and told us we’d all be in it! She used to vlog and so we were excited that she was going to do it again. We decided to walk around the pool deck and see where different things were located.
As I was walking with my sisters and our mom, someone tapped me on my shoulder and I didn’t think anything of it so I turned around and it was Nick!!!!!! I was absolutely stunned. Almost immediately he dropped down onto his knee, told me he loved me and wanted to spend forever with me. I also immediately started ugly crying as I tried to get over the shock of seeing him ON THE SHIP when he had been telling me for months that he wasn’t able to come! I honestly couldn’t believe what had just happened. After I said yes (through the tears), he slipped the most incredible ring on my finger – the one that I had pointed out as my favorite months back!
I couldn’t believe that he had kept it a secret for as long as he had (especially because I love to prod). He told me he had talked to his professors and worked everything out. My family had all known too! He told me that he sent me a selfie and the picture of the parking lot to throw me off (that definitely worked) and I couldn’t believe it. He told me that while we had our day together on Saturday all he could think about was how that was our last date as a dating couple. I still can’t believe it all worked out the way it did. We got to spend the rest of the week together. He called it our engagement honeymoon haha…it was the best week of my life and March 10, 2019, is forever my favorite day.
Since my sisters knew what was going to happen, they said we should all dress fancy one night. I bought a new dress for the trip that I planned on wearing for whenever we dressed up! One of my sisters is a photographer so we ended up doing a mini engagement session while we were on the trip and I got to wear that dress. I loved the pictures she took of us and it was so awesome to be able to get them on the ship we got engaged on!
