How We Met: The background story of my fiance and I: We attended the same high school for 4 years where he had a crush on me, took me to a movie and I thought he was too shy, so I never talked to him again (so sad). I was very outgoing and he was the sweet, quiet one and our personalities just didn’t match at the time. We ended up attending the same university and reconnected after 3 years of school. In our junior year, we reconnected through a mutual friend after we moved in 3 houses away from one another. After we were re-introduced, things just fell into place. At that point, I had had the time that I needed to experience life and grow into the woman that I am today. Jake had also had time to expand his horizons and grow into a mature, level-headed (and incredibly handsome) man! We began dating and on our 2 year anniversary, he took to me to our favorite park and asked me to spend forever with him.
On October 6, 2013, we celebrated our 2 year anniversary. We spent the morning together at church before eating lunch at the restaurant where we had our first date. We sat at our exact same table that overlooked the lake the restaurant was built next to. It was raining that day and we had “plans” after lunch to walk around the beach, so we were both pretty relieved at the fact that the rain let up just as we were paying our bill. We then hurried to our car to head to the beach. On the way, Jake pulled off at an exit in Grand Rapids. When I questioned him, he told me that while we were close, we might as well stop at our favorite spot: a park that overlooked the city. When we got to the park, Jake told me he had one more anniversary present for me, and he wanted me to wait at “our spot” for him to bring it to me. Our spot was a bunch just at the overlook point, so I began walking to it while he parked the car.
On the way to the bench, a couple of my friends came out from behind a tree. As soon as I saw them, I knew something was happening. I looked around the park and realized how full it was… full of our FAMILY and FRIENDS! They took control and ushered me through them two by two. I received a handwritten letter from each group that Jake had written me about memories in our relationship and how they led to where we were that day.
I also received a painted, wooden letter that eventually spelled out the phrase “Will you marry me?” I cried the whole time, his words were beautiful. The fact that our family and friends were there was wonderful and he even got my siblings in from the other side of the state.
The last pairs of people were his parents and my parents, the letters he wrote me were filled with is promises for our future together and his excitement of what was to come. I gave my parents an excited and tearful hug as I saw my man waiting for me at the lookout point, the city stretched behind him. After my dad let go of me, I sprinted to Jake. To be honest, I hardly remember what he said to me after he got down on one knee because all I could think of was our future together, but I do remember him telling how he would love me and take care of me for the rest of our lives together.
I probably let him stay down on his knee for a solid two seconds before I pulled him toward me for the biggest hug I could ever give someone. My heart was and is so full that I can hardly contain myself, so I just wanted to share our story. I am so lucky to be spending the rest of my life with a man who truly knows all of my needs and would give me the world if I asked for it. I cannot wait to be his wife and love him through all of life’s challenges that head our way!
