How We Met
Alex and I met freshman year of college when we both were attending Iowa State University in Ames, IA. I was only 18 and he had just turned 19. One of my best friends and sorority sister actually grew up with him and told me that there was this guy I just had to meet. I finally agreed to get a smoothie at one of the dining centers on campus and once he walked in I knew this was going to be something special. We bonded over our love for sports and our competitive nature, talked about our families, and how we shared a love for Disney World.
When winter break came around, we were sad to be away from each other for 4 weeks so Alex drove 4 hours from his hometown to mine just to visit me for the night on New Year’s Eve and to meet my parents. After a couple of months of getting to know each other more, we attended a huge rivalry basketball game where our Iowa State Cyclones took down the Kansas Jayhawks, and during halftime of that game, Alex asked me to officially be his girlfriend. The rest was history!
How They Asked
I was finishing up my 1st year of DPT School in May and we had been planning a 2-week vacation to celebrate for about a year. The vacation was going to consist of a nice dinner in Chicago and then road-tripping to Yellowstone National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, and Denver to see some family and friends before heading back home. Like a lot of people, our travel plans were canceled due to COVID-19, but Alex still made sure to bring light to my life during these times.
Alex set up a day for his mom and me to hang out and do our nails together. I was a little suspicious but was not getting my hopes up. When he came home for lunch that day he mentioned how he had a special dinner planned for us that night but would not tell me whereat. We got ready together that afternoon and ended up driving to one of my favorite spots around his hometown where there are beautiful views of the Illinois River and treetops from the woods below.
There, he hugged me, told me he loved me and got down on one knee to ask me the easiest question I have ever answered. To make the moment even more amazing, he had a photographer there to capture our love! Once we were done taking photos, we got in the car and drove to his parent’s house for a cookout.
When we walked in and turned the corner into the kitchen there was his family along with MY parents who had surprised me and traveled 4 hours from Iowa to celebrate our big day with us! Needless to say, the night was filled with joyful tears and Alex could not have made this day more amazing. I will cherish these moments forever.
